The digital and environmental transitions – Real-life twins, or incompatible adversaries?
As a new European Commission prepares to take office, and as the EU reflects on how to boost its competitiveness while maintaining its commitment to the Green Deal, the compatibility of the “twin transitions” is increasingly being questioned: are the efficiencies promised by digital technologies necessary tools on the way to a decarbonized and competitive economy? Or are the growing carbon emissions and resource consumption of digital innovations such as generative AI unsustainable for a net-zero future?
How can these conflicting imperatives be reconciled and be translated into the next Commission’s agenda? To discuss these questions, Res Public Europa held a dinner-debate in collaboration with The Shift Project
Matthieu Auzanneau, Director of The Shift Project, and Hugues Ferreboeuf, The Shift’s project director for digital sustainability, presented The Shift Project’s work on digital sustainability, followed by a Chatham House Q&A discussion
