Res Publica Europa presents "Rule of Law or Law of Rulers. EU Democracy at stake?"

With

- Bas Eickhout MEP (Green/EFA, The Netherlands)

- Bence Akos Gát, Head of EU Affairs at the Mathias Corvinus Collegium Brussels

- Róża Thun MEP (Renew, Poland)

Under Article 2 of the Treaty on the EU, the EU is founded on the shared values of democracy, the rule of law and respect for fundamental rights. This post-WWII fundamental principle of the EU should not be put into question. Nor should be its application and interpretation which lie within the remit of the European Commission and the EU Court of Justice. And yet some EU governments put these competences into question and have their own interpretation of the way this core principle should apply across the Union.

How should and can Europe address the rule of law crisis across the continent? Are we actually witnessing a slow erosion of democracy across the continent? How do we safeguard the values of the EU, when some don't prioritise them? Join us and our speakers to delve into the challenges associated with defining the rule of law in a first place and holding all accountable for respecting it.

This in-person event will be moderated by Dorota Bawolek, political commentator and EU-affairs correspondent for Polish media.
